Instead, the border police have been told to encourage themtoapplyforcitizenshipunder the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). The CAA, which had incited protests in several parts of the country including Assam’s BrahmaputraValleybutwaswelcomed in the state’s primarily Bengali-speaking Barak Valley, wasfinallysetinmotionwiththe notificationof rulesforitsimplementation in March this year.
