Married just six months before and four months pregnant then, the accident led to bleeding in her brain, necessitating an urgent three-hour surgery and an eight-month-long hospital stay. Nowbackhomeandcradling her five-month-old baby boy, Roshni Kumar is still labouring from the after-effects of her accident — partial paralysis on the left side of her body that has forced her to use a wheelchair and caused her speech to slur. Yet, Roshni is grateful to the doctors at the Indian Armed Forces’ Command Hospital (Northern Command), Udhampur, where she was treated, for her miraculousturnaround.Andtoherhusband Abhishek Kumar for being the rock in their relationship as they went through the ordeal. Roshni fell off the bike due to a jerk on a speed breaker. I immediately took her to Satwari Military hospital. She was unconsciousandlookingathercritical condition, doctors shifted her to Command Hospital at Udhampur. I was in no state to think. Bachne ki koi umeed nahi thi (there was no guarantee of her survival),” he says. Afterthesurgery,shewasput on mechanical ventilation for 46 days. Besides, the accident had causedhervisiontodiminishand she had to undergo an eye surgeryduringherlonghospitalstay. Through it all, doctors at the 650-bed Command Hospital had one major challenge: keeping both Roshni and the foetus from any harm. The hospital at Udhampurhasthedistinctionof being the only tertiary care hospital of the Armed Forces Medical Services to be located in a Counter Insurgency (CI) operational area. When she was brought in, Roshni was categorised as extreme high risk, which meant thatsherequiredcriticalcareand immediate surgery. The doctors also explained to the family the risksof theemergencytreatment — specifically, how exposure to radiation could potentially put the foetus at risk of deformities. Eventually, a decision was taken to continue and save the pregnancy, with all the attendant risks. Then began the more challenging part of the treatment. “She was protected from all radiation exposures.
